Our Whole Lives

http://www.uua.org/re/owl/

Our Whole Lives (OWL) helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. OWL helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas:

  • human development
  • relationships
  • personal skills
  • sexual behavior
  • sexual health
  • society and culture

OWL is appropriate for use in a variety of congregational, school, and community settings, including classrooms, after-school programs, and youth groups. Although developed by two religious organizations, Our Whole Lives contains no religious references or doctrine. Religious references are provided in a Unitarian Universalist and United Church of Christ companion publication, Sexuality and Our Faith.

What does it mean to be LGBTQIA?

LGBTQIA

Understanding sexuality can be a complex process. Do you have questions about sex, gender, and sexual orientation? Luther's Emmaus student group sponsored a recent Ally Training to explore basics and nuances of these three aspects of human identity.

  • Lesbian — a female/woman who has significant sexual attractions primarily to members of the same gender or sex, or who identifies as a member of the lesbian community.
  • Gay — one who has significant sexual attractions primarily to members of the same gender or sex, or who identifies as a member of the gay community. Typicaly associated with male-identified persons
  • Bisexual — The potential to be sexually attracted to people of more than one sex and/or gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.
  • Transgender — Umbrella term for those whose gender expression or identity is not congruent with the sex assigned at birth and/or whose gender is not validated by dominant culture.
  • Questioning —
  • Intersex — a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the typical definitions of female or male.
  • Ally — a person who actively works to eliminate and interrupt all forms of oppression. An ally is motivated by self-interest, a sense of moral obligation, and/or a commmitment to foster social justice.
