Sexual Violence Awareness Week

Shattering the Silence of Sexual Violence
Sexual violence is a pervasive and devastating problem around the world that is, for the most part, shrouded in silence. This spring, at Luther Seminary we have the opportunity to help put an end to that silence. A number of students, faculty, and staff are sharing their voices, along with their gifts, in organizing a number of events aimed at helping our community enter into this important conversation.

Each year Luther observes Sexual Violence Awareness Week through worship, prayer, films, and discussions. Through all of this our hope is to help equip Christian public leaders with resources for engaging sexual violence in their own ministry contexts.

Why? Because considering one in four women and one in six men will endure an unwanted sexual experience at some point in their lives, it is only too likely that we will encounter survivors in our congregations, on college campuses, in hospitals, and other places in which we are privileged to serve. We are in a position to address and respond to this moral evil—shattering the silence that surrounds it—and to make God’s transformative, healing, and holy love known. May it be so.
